The vision for the partnership resulted from the lack of a basic community necessity; a neighborhood market. Although each member has long moved away, they’ve maintained close contact with family and friends who reside in New Iberia. Despite the distance in miles between them, they still consider New Iberia “home” and often gather several times a year to visit. During their visits, they often discussed the lack of choice for certain basic community services in their old neighborhood. After receiving various comments from family and friends regarding this issue, they decided to become part of the solution for a community they sincerely cherish. When they were growing up in the area, a “Piggly Wiggly” supermarket once existed in the neighborhood but had long since moved out. The absence of a local grocery store left a void for an existing customer base yearning for new business, which never materialized. The owners firmly believe that the Hopkins Street Neighborhood Market will complement the surrounding area and provide a welcoming service that will be embraced by the local community. The members have expressed a sense of family, loyalty, and dedication to their former community and want to give back as a result of their own personal successes. In February 2009, a member of the group discovered a suitable site for the business near the area where the old “Piggly Wiggly” supermarket once stood. After settling on the site, the company was formed and purchased the land for constructing their proposed business.
